From the beginning of his career, Juan Cantarell was already described as “A conductor who presents himself at the service of the music with rich and nuanced gestures, far from any narcissistic manners”. Musical assistant to Karel Mark Chichon at the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie Saarbrücken, in 2015 he began his collaboration with the State Philharmonic Orchestra “Mihail Jora” (Bacau, Romania), from which he has been appointed as Permanent Guest Conductor. Musical director of the Hunedoara Opera Festival (Deva) where he perormed “Macbeth”, “Il trovatore” and “Rigoletto” by Verdi and Puccini`s “Tosca”. Past and upcoming concerts the Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria (OFGC), stage rehearsals with the Wiener Kammerorchester at the Vienna Konzerthaus, concert at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam with opera star Elina Garanca and the Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz, Prague State Opera Orchestra, Quebecq Chamber Orchestra, Artur Rubinstein Philharmonic Lodz, etc. At the same time, he has always focused part of his activity on projects for young musicians and youth orchestras.
Almost all projects from March 2020 were cancelled due to COVID-19, restarting activities in July 2021 with the Serbian National Theatre Orchestra and more venues to come from October 2021, both symphonic and operatic like “La Bohème” (Bacau-Romania) and “Don Pasquale” among others, or Rossini’s “Petite Messe solennelle” with the Lower Silesian Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir.
Born in Barcelona. Piano studies at the Academia Marshall with M. Roldós and Alícia de Larrocha, with whom he made his conducting debut at the “Schubertíada a Vilabertran”. Conducting studies at the Hochshule für Musik in Vienna, and the Royal Academy of Music (London) under Sir Colin Davis. He attended the “Corsi di Perfezionamento” at the Accademia Chigiana (Siena) under F. Leitner, I. Musin and Valery Gergiev, among others.
